CONTEST
Congratulations! October's newsletter contest winner is Audrey in Idaho.
She wins an 11 fl oz bottle of Watkins Clear Vanilla! This extract is great for wedding cakes, divinity,
and other baked goods and frostings that need to be pure white. It is bake-proof, freeze-proof, and double-strength.
Thank you for the gift ideas! These are my favorite subscriber gift ideas!
- My gift idea would be great for bakers. Take a mixing bowl and put in a variety of the Watkins
extracts. Wrap it with dish towels and tie on a wooden spoon.
- One idea is to give some of the home keeping supplies with a ‘coupon’ of your own time to
come over once (or once a month) and help clean the house. My mom, who is 75, REALLY would
appreciate this gift because she is not really able to do all the tough jobs, and we could spend the
entire time together, chatting and just being together. She doesn’t need or want gifts from some
department store – she wants the love and companionship.
- The one I have given the most is the Lemon Body Butter. It is such a nice looking container, that all I
have done is wrapped it in some decorative tissue paper, and tied the top closed with a pretty
ribbon and added a cute tag.
- Another gift I have given is the peppermint foot scrub and peppermint foot cream. I find a small
clear container that a foot will fit into, add a nice hand towel, add Watkins Peppermint foot scrub
and Peppermint foot cream, and some nail polish so the recipient can give themselves a pedicure. This
gift is always well received. All I do is add some shredded paper for filler and a cute tag or card. I
have given this gift as a house warming gift, a new mother gift, or as a "secretary" week gift.
- A copy of the Watkins Vanilla Classics Cookbook and a bottle of Watkins Vanilla in a gift bag, mixing
bowl, or tied in a kitchen towel.

HEALTH TIP
Eggs: Are they good or bad for your cholesterol level?
Eggs do contain cholesterol. According to the American Heart Association, saturated fat and
cholesterol in the foods you eat increase your blood cholesterol level. Although saturated fat is the
main culprit, cholesterol also plays a role. Reducing the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol in
your diet helps lower your blood cholesterol level.
Some research suggests that dietary cholesterol has little effect on blood cholesterol in some
people. But in others, it has a big effect. If you have high blood pressure or a family history of
cardiovascular disease, it makes sense to limit eggs in your diet. Talk to your doctor about what's
appropriate in your specific situation.
The yolk of the egg has all the cholesterol — about 212 milligrams (mg) of cholesterol.
Recommendations are to limit dietary cholesterol to 300 mg a day — 200 mg a day if you have
high blood cholesterol. This allows for three to four egg yolks a week. Egg whites and egg
substitutes are cholesterol-free and can be used in place of whole eggs. In general, two egg whites
are the equivalent of one whole egg in cooking. Check the label on egg substitutes for the equivalent.

If your recipe calls for buttermilk and you don't have fresh buttermilk, you can
substitute powdered buttermilk. It's in the baking section at your local grocery or supermarket.

RECIPES
This issue has some more yummy recipes using our Gifts and Entertaining products. Enjoy!
Roast Turkey with Sausage and Apple Stuffing
Stuffing
12 ounces/340 g bulk mild pork sausage
6 slices bacon, chopped
1 cup/250 mL chopped onion
1 cup/250 mL chopped celery
1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and chopped (about 1 cup/250 ml)
6 cups/1.5 liters dried bread cubes
1 cup/250 mL water
1-1/2 tbsp/22.5 mL Watkins Chicken Soup Base
1 tbsp/15 mL Watkins Poultry Seasoning
Turkey
10 to 12 pound/4.5 to 5.5 kg turkey
1/4 cup/60 mL Watkins Meat Magic
1 tbsp/15 mL Watkins Poultry Seasoning
Cooking Directions
Stuffing
Cook sausage and bacon in skillet, stirring until sausage crumbles; drain (reserve 2 tbsp/30 mL of
the drippings) and place in a large bowl. Cook onion, celery, and apple in drippings over
medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until tender (about 5 minutes); remove from heat.
Add to meat mixture along with bread cubes, water, soup base and Poultry Seasoning; mix well.
Set aside while preparing turkey.
Turkey
Remove giblets and neck from turkey; discard or reserve for another use. Rinse turkey thoroughly
with cold water; pat dry. Place turkey breast side up in roasting pan; rub inside and out with Meat
Magic and Poultry Seasoning. Stuff loosely with Sausage-Apple Stuffing (place any remaining stuffing
in a casserole to bake later). Bake turkey, uncovered, at 325°F/165ºC for 4 to 4-1/2 hours,
basting occasionally with pan juices. Meat thermometer should read 185°F/85ºC. Cover loosely
with foil if turkey begins to get too brown. Remove from oven and let stand 15 minutes before
carving. Place casserole with remaining stuffing in the oven the last hour before serving. Toss
stuffing from turkey with that in casserole. Makes 12 servings.
Note from Kitchen: To make stuffing entirely in casserole dish, add a little more water if a moist
stuffing is desired.

the cookie bag itself.
Gather all of the dry ingredients that are required for the particular recipe that you've chosen to use.
When adding the ingredients into the zip bag, carefully measure according to the recipe and place
each ingredient into the zip-top bag.
NOTE: You can also use a mason jar or other decorative jar to put the recipe ingredients into.
If you choose to use a jar, layer the ingredients into the jar in colorful rows.
You should now have all of the ingredients measured and placed into the container you will be
wrapping up.
Place your piece of fabric around the bag or jar and gather it at the top. (you will probably need to
get a large piece of fabric and then trim the excess from the top)
Once you have the fabric wrapped around the cookie ingredients, tie the top first with a
rubber band-to insure it will stay put-and then decorate with ribbon or colored string.
Attach the recipe to the bag. You can use a hole punch and punch a hole in the card, string some
ribbon through it and attach to the top.
For an extra fun addition to this gift, add a Christmas shaped cookie cutter,
wooden spoon, rubber spatula, wire wisk, or bells and tie it on as you secure the top.
That’s all there is to it! And the best part - no wrapping! Why hide it in a gift bag?
ADDITIONAL TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS
You can use recipes for cakes, brownies practically anything! Just be sure to include the recipe so
the gift recipient knows what wet ingredients to add.
Make a gift Baker’s basket! Create the cookie bag then add cookie cutters, cupcake tins and
papers, measuring utensils and any other things that will help with making these delicious
confections.

If you're looking for great how-to projects to help birds this fall,
The Original Birdhouse Book.
It contains carefully detailed instructions and easy-to-understand drawings for 26 birdhouses,
nesting shelves, and roosting and nesting boxes, as well as feeder and bath plans. Just $11.95!
Cool autumn weather brings more birds to your backyard feeders. Clean all your feeders and
bird houses. First, remove all seed hulls and old seeds from the feeders. Scrub feeders with a brush
or sponge and water. A little soap can be added to the water but always make sure feeders are
rinsed thoroughly to remove all soap residue that might be harmful to the birds.
A disinfectant made with nine parts water to one part bleach should be sprayed on the feeder and
then rinsed thoroughly. (A mixture of nine parts water and one part vinegar can be substituted for
the bleach mixture.) After rinsing thoroughly with water, dry the feeders with a rag and then air
dry before adding fresh seed.
Don't forget to scrub your hummingbird feeder to remove old sugar water and mold from feeding
ports. Rinse. Then fill with fresh sugar water.
Recipe for sugar water
4 cups boiling water
1 cup sugar
Bring water to a rolling boil. Carefully add one cup sugar and stir to dissolve. Cool mixture and
fill hummingbird feeders. Store unused sugar water in refrigerator for up to a week.
Scrub bird baths and water dishes with a brush to remove dirt and algae. Spray with disinfectant
mixture and rinse thoroughly. Then fill with fresh water.
Feeders and water dishes should be cleaned often during the winter feeding months.
