If you've ever suspected that the popular earbud headphones, which place the sound of music in the ears, might have a deafening effect, you had it right. With the volume turned way up, even an hour a day of direct-to-the-eardrums sound could lead to hearing loss. Here's some good news: You can download free software that locks in a volume limit on your iPod.

Music addicts quickly discover that, unlike earmuff-style headphones, earbuds let them listen to tunes at a higher volume without anyone yelling, "Turn it down!" But whether the noise is hip-hop or Bach, overexposure can harm the ear's sensitive hearing mechanisms, temporarily, if you're lucky, permanently, if not.

It's a good idea to limit both volume and the time spent wearing any headphones, but especially earbuds. Some experts suggest aiming for no more than a few hours a day of exposure to sounds higher than 90 decibels (about the sound of a vacuum cleaner or lawn mower). But to keep hearing sharp for years to come, noise researchers studying headsets recently recommended using them no more than an hour a day.

My husband gave me an iPod shuffle for Mother's Day. It's a tiny iPod with a cord so you can wear it around your neck. Instead of listening to tunes I listen to books on tape while I'm walking, sewing, or watering flowers.

Did you know that you can make many pie recipes without the crust? Just pour the filling into a pie pan that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Examples: pumpkin, custard, buttermilk, chocolate cream.

When you don't have half-and-half, you can substitute 1 cup of evaporated milk for 1 cup of half-and-half.

Frosting Recipe and Mousse Recipe Using Watkins Dessert and Frosting Mixes

Frosting
Combine 2 cups/500 ml powdered sugar, 1/2 cup/125 ml Watkins Dessert Mix (Chocolate, Vanilla, Banana, Butterscotch, or Lemon), 1/4 cup/60 ml vegetable shortening, butter, or margarine, and 1/3 cup/80 ml half-and-half. Mix with electric mixer for about 2 minutes. Add more half-and-half or powdered sugar as needed for desired consistency.

Mousse
Fold 2 cups/500 ml sweetened whipped cream into one recipe of cooked and cooled Watkins Chocolate, Vanilla, or Lemon Pudding.

1/4 cup/60 ml rice vinegar
2tbsp/30 ml Watkins Sesame Garlic Snack and Dip Seasoning
1 tbsp/15 ml Watkins Ginger-Garlic Liquid Spice
1 tbsp/15 ml Watkins Spicy Garlic Soy Sauce
1tbsp/15 ml sugar
3/4 cup/180 ml Watkins Original Grapeseed Oil

Combine first five ingredients. Add oil slowly, beating with whisk or fork. Makes about 1 1/4 cups.

Italian Pepper and Lime Steak Pasta Salad

Marinade/Dressing
1/2 cup/125 ml sliced green onion
1/2 cup/125 ml lime juice
1/4 cup/60 ml sugar
1/4 cup/60 ml water
2 tbsp/30 ml Watkins Grapeseed Oil
2 tbsp/30 ml Watkins Garlic Flakes
1 tsp/5 ml salt
1 tbsp/15 ml Watkins Italian Pepper

Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Reserve half of the mixture to use as a dressing. Pour the other half over beef in ziplock bag. Refrigerate for 4 to 14 hours, turning occasionally.

Steak
1 16 oz/454 g beef flank or top round steak, cut about 1/2 inch thick

Marinate steak as directed above. Grill or fry until desired doneness. Cool slightly. Slice across the grain into thin, bite-sized strips.

Salad
1 medium sweet red, yellow, or green pepper, thinly sliced
1 cup/250 ml black olives, sliced
1/4 cup/60 ml feta cheese, crumbled
2 tbsp/30 ml feta cheese for top of salad
4 cups/1 litre cooked bow tie pasta

Toss reserved dressing with remaining ingredients. Top with steak. If desired, grill the peppers along with the steak.

Summer Corn, Bacon and Potato Chowder

There's nothing like freshly-picked sweet corn. This chowder is a delicious blend of sweet corn, buttery-tasting Yukon Gold potatoes and smoky Canadian bacon. (A Weight Watchers Recipe)

1 medium Yukon Gold potato
1 spray cooking spray
1/2 cup celery, chopped
1/4 cup onion(s), chopped (or 1 large shallot)
4 piece corn on the cob, kernels removed with a knife
1 cup sweet red pepper(s), diced
4 oz Canadian-style bacon, diced
2 cup fat-free skim milk
1/2 tsp table salt
1/4 tsp Watkins Black Pepper
1/8 tsp hot pepper sauce, or to taste

Puncture potato in several places with a fork; microwave on high power until tender, turning over once, about 8 minutes. Allow to cool; peel and mash. Or bake potato in oven.

Meanwhile, coat a large saucepan with cooking spray. Add celery, onion, corn and red pepper; sauté over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes. (Note: Feel free to substitute your favorite fresh vegetables like asparagus and broccoli for the red pepper. Or to save time, substitute 2 cups of frozen corn and 1 cup of frozen, diced bell pepper for the fresh corn and red pepper.)

Stir bacon and milk into saucepan; stir in mashed potato and mix well. Season with salt, pepper and hot pepper sauce; stir to combine. Cover and simmer 10 minutes (do not allow to boil).

Strawberry Cheesecake Pie
The perfect dessert for summer. Using fat free milk, fat free cream cheese, and only 1/2 cup of sugar makes this lucious pie a real treat.

1 prepared 9-inch (6 ounces) graham cracker crumb crust
2/3 cup (5 fluid-ounce can) Evaporated Fat Free Milk
1 package (8 ounces) fat free cream cheese, softened
1 large egg
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon Watkins Vanilla
1 teaspoon fresh grated lemon peel or 1/3 teaspoon Watkins Lemon Peel
1 1/2 to 2 cups halved fresh strawberries
3 tablespoons strawberry jelly, warmed

Preheat oven to 325° F.

Place evaporated milk, cream cheese, egg, sugar, flour, vanilla, and lemon peel in blender; cover. Blend until smooth. Pour into crust.

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until center is set. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. Arrange strawberries on top of pie; drizzle with jelly. Refrigerate for 2 hours before serving.

Swirled Ice Cream Pie
With ice cream nestled between scrumptious layers of peanut butter and Swirled Milk Chocolate and Peanut Butter Morsels, this chilled delight is sure to have all your party guests asking for more.

1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter, divided
1 prepared 8-inch (6 oz.) chocolate crumb crust
1 cup (6 oz.) Swirled Milk Chocolate and Peanut Butter Morsels, divided
1 qt. (4 cups) vanilla or chocolate ice cream, slightly softened
1/4 cup chopped peanuts
Add 1/2 teaspoon Watkins Peanut Butter Flavoring for extra peanut butter flavor.

Spread 1/4 cup peanut butter over bottom of crust. Sprinkle with 2/3 cup morsels. Place small scoops of ice cream over morsels. Sprinkle with Watkins peanut butter flavoring. Freeze for a few minutes if ice cream becomes too soft. Place remaining 2 tablespoons peanut butter in small, heavy-duty plastic bag. Microwave on HIGH (100%) power for about 20 seconds or until soft, kneading until smooth. Cut a small hole in corner of bag; squeeze to drizzle over ice cream. Sprinkle peanuts and remaining morsels over top of pie. Cover; freeze for 2 hours or until firm.

Chocolate Lover's Chocolate Mousse Pie
Chocolate crust with a milk chocolate coating, fluffy chocolate filling, whipped cream and a chocolate drizzle: this pie is not for the faint of heart!

1 cup graham cracker crumbs
1/3 cup Watkins Baking Cocoa
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup butter, melted
2 3/4 cups (16 ounces) Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels, divided
2 cups heavy whipping cream, divided
2 teaspoons powdered sugar
1 teaspoon Watkins Vanilla Extract

Preheat oven to 350° F.

Combine graham cracker crumbs, cocoa and granulated sugar in 9-inch pie plate. Stir in butter until moistened; press onto bottom and up side of pie plate.

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. Sprinkle 1/2 cup morsels over bottom of hot crust; let stand for 10 minutes or until all morsels are shiny. Spread chocolate over bottom and up side of crust. Cool to room temperature.

Microwave 2 cups morsels and 3/4 cup cream in large, uncovered, microwave-safe bowl on HIGH (100%) power for 1 minute; Stir. The morsels may retain some of their original shape. If necessary, microwave at additional 10- to 15-second intervals, stirring just until morsels are melted. Cool to room temperature.

Beat remaining cream, powdered sugar and vanilla extract in chilled small mixer bowl until soft peaks form. Fold 2 cups whipped cream into chocolate mixture. Spoon into crust; swirl top. Garnish with remaining whipped cream. Refrigerate until firm.

Microwave remaining 1/4 cup morsels in heavy-duty plastic bag on HIGH (100%) power for about 30 seconds; knead until smooth. Cut tiny corner from bag; squeeze to drizzle chocolate over pie. Let stand a few minutes before serving.

Not-So-Sloppy Summer Suet

Most suets are messy because they melt in the summer heat. This suet recipe will give your backyard birds a real treat without melting.

4 cups cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup shortening
1 cup mixed bird seed

Combine all the ingredients; mix well. Put in an onion bag or suet feeder, or pack in pinecones or into the bark of trees. Then watch the birds enjoy this hearty feast. I divide suet into patties and keep in plastic bag in freezer until ready to feed birds.

The packing pellets that Watkins uses to ship their products are made of cornstarch and are biodegradable. Use them to protect your own packages when mailing to family and friends. If you like to recycle, take them to your local packaging and shipping company. They will recycle them for you.
