And it's not clear why, but having lots of close friends and family, the kind you can call on for help or confide in about private matters, appears to help shore up those neural reserves.

Barbecue Snack Mix

3 cups Rice Chex cereal
3 cups Corn Chex cereal
1 1/2 cups bite-size pretzel twists
1 1/2 cups bite-size cheese crackers
3/4 cup honey-roasted peanuts
1/2 cup Watkins Original Barbecue Sauce Concentrate, prepared according to directions on bottle
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3/4 teaspoon Watkins Organic Onion Powder
3/4 teaspoon Watkins Organic Garlic Powder

1. In large microwavable bowl, mix cereals, pretzels, crackers and peanuts.
2. In medium bowl, mix remaining ingredients until well blended. Pour over cereal mixture, stirring until evenly coated.
3. Microwave uncovered for 5 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes. Or bake at 250 degrees F for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Spread on foil or paper towels to cool, about 15 minutes. Store in airtight container.

Lemonade Iced Tea

2 cans (12 ounces each) frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed
3 quarts iced tea
Fresh mint sprigs, lemon slices, or maraschino cherries

1. Make lemonade as directed on can, using punch bowl or large container. Stir in tea.
2. Serve over ice. Garnish with mint, lemon slice, or cherry.
3. Makes 20 one-cup servings.

Oven-Fried Picnic Chicken

2/3 cup buttermilk
8 boneless skinless chicken breasts (2 1/2 lb)
1 cup corn flakes cereal
1 cup Original Bisquick mix or all-purpose flour
1/3 cup Watkins Sesame Garlic Snack and Dip Seasoning, dry
Watkins Cooking spray

1. Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Spray cookie sheet with cooking spray.
2. Pour buttermilk into shallow glass or plastic bowl. Add chicken; turn to coat. Let stand 5 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, in 2-quart resealable food-storage plastic bag, crush cereal with rolling pin. Add Bisquick mix or flour and seasoning mix (dry) to cereal in bag. Shake to combine. Remove chicken from buttermilk; discard buttermilk. Add chicken to cereal mixture. Seal bag; shake to coat.
4. Place chicken on cookie sheet. Spray with cooking spray. Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until juice of chicken is clear when center of thickest part is cut (170 degrees F).

Grilled Honey-Mustard Turkey Sandwiches

1/4 cup Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons honey
1/4 teaspoon Watkins Organic Garlic Powder
1/8 to 1/ teaspoon Watkins Ground Red Pepper (cayenne)
1 teaspoon water
1 pound turkey breast slices, cut into 4 serving pieces
4 whole-grain sandwich buns, split
8 thin slices tomato
Leaf lettuce

1. Mix mustard, honey, garlic powder, red pepper and water; brush on turkey.
2. Heat coals or gas grill.
3. Cover and grill turkey 4 to 6 inches from medium coals 8 to 10 minutes, brushing with mustard mixture and turning occasionally, until juice is no longer pink when centers of thickest pieces are cut. Discard any remaining mustard mixture. Serve turkey on buns with tomato and lettuce.

Barbecued Ribs with Root Beer Barbecue Sauce

2 racks (6.5 pounds/3 kg) pork spareribs, cut into 2-rib portions
1/2 cup/125 mL cider vinegar
2 tbsp/30 mL (any flavor) Watkins Original Barbecue Sauce Concentrate or Mesquite Barbecue Sauce Concentrate
2 tbsp/30 mL Watkins Onion Granules
2 tsp/10 mL Watkins Garlic Granules
2 tsp/10 mL Watkins Black Pepper
1 tsp/5 mL salt, or as desired
Water

Root Beer Barbecue Sauce

2/3 cup/160 mL Watkins Original Barbecue Sauce Concentrate or Mesquite Barbecue Sauce Concentrate
1-1/3 cups/320 mL ketchup
2 tsp/10 mL Watkins Root Beer Flavor
1/2 tsp/2.5 mL Watkins Ginger
1/4 tsp/1.2 mL Watkins Allspice

Combine first seven ingredients in large kettle or Dutch oven; cover with water. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, cover and simmer for 1-1/2 hours; drain (Can be made ahead to this point. Cool, cover and refrigerate until 1 hour before broiling or grilling.) Combine sauce ingredients in bowl and have ready to baste meat. Arrange ribs on grill or broiler rack.

To grill: Grill ribs 10 minutes, turning once. Baste with barbecue sauce; grill 5 minutes. Turn and baste again with sauce; grill 5 minutes more.

To broil: Broil ribs about 7 to 9 inches from heat for 20 minutes or until heated through, brushing with barbecue sauce occasionally and turning once.

Serve any remaining barbecue sauce with ribs. Makes 8 servings.

Root Beer Baked Beans

1/2 lb/225 g bacon, diced
1 medium onion, diced
2 tbsp/30 mL Watkins Original Barbecue Sauce Concentrate
1/4 cup/60 mL ketchup
2 (28 oz/798 g) cans baked beans
1/4 tsp/1.2 mL Watkins Root Beer Extract
1 tsp/5 mL prepared mustard
2 tbsp/30 mL brown sugar
Dash Watkins Calypso Hot Pepper Sauce
Watkins Black Pepper, to taste

Cook bacon and onion in skillet until bacon is brown and crisp. Pour off drippings. Combine barbecue sauce concentrate and ketchup; add to skillet. Mix in remaining ingredients. Bake at 350 degrees F/150 degrees C for 1 hour. Makes 12 servings.

Angel Food Flag Cake

1 package white angel food cake mix or two purchased loaf shaped angel food cakes
3 cups fresh or frozen unsweetened (thawed and drained) raspberries
3 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons seedless red raspberry jam, melted
1 container (8 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed (3 cups)
2 cups fresh blueberries

1. Move oven rack to middle position. Heat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Prepare angel food cake mix according to package directions. Pour into 2 ungreased loaf pans, 9x5x3 inches, or 3 ungreased loaf pans, 8 1/2x4 1/2x2 1/2 inches.
3. Bake 9-inch pans 35 to 45 minutes, 8 1/2-inch pans 28 to 38 minutes, or until top is dark golden brown and cracks feel very dry and not sticky. Do not underbake. Immediately turn each pan on its side on heatproof surface and let rest until completely cool. Run knife around edges; remove from pans.
4. Line each loaf pan with plastic wrap, allowing wrap to extend over edges. Place raspberries, sugar and jam in food processor; cover and process, using 3 quick on-and-off motions, until coarsely chopped. Cut each loaf cake horizontally into 4 slices, using serrated or electric knife. Place 1 slice in bottom of each pan; spread 3 tablespoons of the raspberry mixture over each. Top with another slice cake. Repeat with remaining raspberry mixture and cake slices. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 2 hours until chilled.
5. To remove loaves easily from pans, place serving plate upside down on top of pan; turn pan upside down onto plate. Remove pan and plastic wrap. Cut each loaf crosswise into 8 slices, using serrated or electric knife. Serve with whipped topping and blueberries.

Banana Cake
This irresistible cake is brimming with goodies - bananas, oats, spices, nuts and raisins.

1 egg 2/3 cup vegetable oil
2/3 cup buttermilk
1 1/2 cups mashed very ripe bananas (4 medium)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon Watkins Vanilla
1 1/2 cups cake flour
1 cup quick-cooking or old-fashioned oats
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons Watkins Ground Cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon Watkins Ground Cloves
2/3 cup chopped nuts
2/3 cup raisins
Powdered sugar

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray rectangular pan, 13x9x2 inches, with cooking spray.
2. Beat egg, oil, buttermilk, bananas, granulated sugar and vanilla in large bowl. Stir in flour, oats, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and cloves. Stir in nuts and raisins. Pour into pan.
3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean; cool. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
