NPA Certification for more Watkins Products! As the demand for natural personal care products - such as lotions, balms and shampoos - continues to soar, manufacturers are responding with a host of new products. Some are natural, some aren't. But how is a shopper to know? To end this confusion and help consumers, recently the Natural Products Association announced a new certification program which defines natural and includes an easily-identified seal. Shoppers can expect the seal to begin appearing on certified personal care products in the coming months. And guess what? J.R. Watkins Natural Apothecary has earned this seal of approval from the Natural Products Association for 21 different products! This coveted seal represents the standard for natural in the personal care industry.

The Natural Products Association standard is science-based and was developed by a team of experts from the association and natural products manufacturers. The advisory panel drew from a variety of sources, including relevant international standards, third-party organizations, existing research, and years of experience in the field. The association represents more than 10,000 retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors of natural products, including foods, dietary supplements, and health/beauty aids.
Sauteed Chicken with Mushroom Sauce
2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper and then dredge them in flour, shaking off the excess flour. Saute the chicken in 2 tablespoons melted butter in a large skillet over medium high heat, turning once when the bottom of the chicken is browned and halfway cooked. Reduce the heat to medium and continue cooking uncovered until the chicken is browned and done (170 to 175 degrees). Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside. Melt the butter in the pan and add the mushrooms. Saute the mushrooms until they turn light brown. Add the chicken broth to the pan and continue cooking. Mix the flour and water. Mix a little hot broth; then slowly pour it into the broth and mushrooms, stirring constantly. Continue cooking until the sauce bubbles and thickens. Slowly add the cream and stir to combine. Stir in the lemon juice. Salt and pepper to taste. Place the chicken on a plate and pour the mushroom sauce over the top. Serve.
Minestrone with Italian Sausage In a soup kettle, cook sausage and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the carrots, celery, and garlic; cook for 3 minutes. Add zucchini and green beans; cook 2 minutes longer. Stir in broth, tomatoes, cabbage, basil, oregano and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 45 minutes. Return to a boil. Stir in the garbanzo beans, pasta and parsley. Cook for 6-9 minutes or until pasta is tender. Serve with Parmesan cheese. Yield: 11 servings (about 3 quarts).
Peppermint Patties
2 cups powdered sugar Line a cookie sheet with wax paper. In a blender, cream together the sugar, butter, extracts, and cream on low speed. after the ingredients are combined, raise the speed to medium-high and beat for an additional 1-2 minutes until mixture holds together very well and is creamy, not powdery. Using a teaspoon, roll the candy into small balls and flatten them on the wax paper or silpat with the palm of you hand into patty shapes. When done, put them in the refrigerator to chill for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, melt the chopped chocolate and the shortening in the microwave or over a double boiler. Using dipping tools or two dinner forks, dip the patties into the chocolate one by one. Drag them across the lip of the bowl to remove any excess chocolate. Return them to the wax paper or silpat, and place back in the refrigerator to set the candies. They should be ready to eat in a few hours. Due to the dairy ingredient, these need to be kept in the refrigerator. Layer the patties between sheets of parchment in an airtight container. They'll keep for a month.
Sour Cream Coffee Muffins
Filling
Muffins Mix butter, sugar and eggs. Add sour cream and vanilla. Add dry ingredients. Spoon 1 tablespoon of mix into prepared muffin pan. Top with 1 teaspoon filling and then 1 tablespoon batter. Sprinkle remaining filling on top of each muffin. Bake at 375 degrees F for 25 minutes. Remove from pan and cool. 12 servings
Chocolate Mint Fondue
1/3 cup whipping cream Bring cream to simmer in medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add chocolate and whisk over low heat until chocolate mixture is smooth. Stir in peppermint. Transfer chocolate sauce to fondue pot and keep warm over candle or fondue burner. Use fondue forks or skewers to stab a chunk of something to dip into chocolate fondue.
Cherry Sugar Cookies
For the Cherry Topping
For the cookie dough Add the flour, salt, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Mix to combine. Divide the dough into 4 cylinder shapes, each about 1-1/4 inches in diameter. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill until firm, about 2 hours.
For the topping
For the cookies Slice the chilled dough about 1/4-inch thick and place the slices on ungreased baking sheets about 1-1/2 inches apart. Using the back of a teaspoon, make a small depression in the center of each cookie and fill with about 1 teaspoon of the cherry topping. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden. Cool on the baking sheets, then remove the cookies, using a spatula.
I had some stale Peanut Butter Cookies so I put them in the suet feeder for the birds. The Western Scrub Jays feasted on them until they were gone! Birds have definite likes and dislikes about what they eat. Different species like different kinds of bird seed and suet. I've always wondered if birds taste flavors or if their body systems know what foods are required to nourish their bodies and help them survive.
