LAUGH WITH ME
A girl phones her boyfriend and says, "Please come over here and help me. I have got a very difficult jigsaw puzzle. I can't figure our how to get it started." Her boyfriend asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?" She answers, "According to the picture on the box it's a tiger."
He decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in, shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, looks at the box, turns to her and says, "First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble all of these pieces into anything resembling a tiger."
He takes her hand and says, "Second, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and then (he sighed,) let's put all the Frosted Flakes back in the box."

1 cup chicken broth prepared with Watkins Chicken Soup Base
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 cup marsala wine
1 can (4 ounces) sliced mushrooms, drained

Conversation Cupcakes
For your favorite Valentine spell out sweet sentiments on these quaint cupcakes using a cake mix. Bake them using a standard or heart-shaped muffin tin.
1 package (18-1/4 ounces) white cake mix
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 teaspoon Watkins Vanilla Extract
1/8 teaspoon Watkins Butter Flavoring, optional
4 cups confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1 to 2 drops red food coloring, optional
1 to 2 drops yellow food coloring, optional
1 to 2 drops blue food coloring, optional
Prepare cake mix according to package directions.
Place paper or foil liners in a heart-shaped or standard muffin tin. Fill cups half full of batter. Bake according to package directions for cupcakes. Cool for 10 minutes; remove from pans to wire racks to cool completely.
For frosting, cream butter and shortening in a small mixing bowl. Add vanilla and butter flavoring for added buttery taste. Add sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in milk until light and fluffy.
Divide frosting into fourths; place in flour separate bowls. Leave one bowl untinted. Add food coloring to the other three bowls; stir until well blended. Frost cupcakes. Pipe untinted frosting around edges and decorate tops with Valentine phrases. Yield: 24 cupcakes.
Conversation Heart Cookies
Make heart-shaped sugar cookies and then frost and write a Valentine saying on each cookie.
Favorite Soft Sugar Cookies
1/2 cup shortening (part butter or margarine)
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. Watkins Vanilla Extract
2 2/3 cup flour
1 tsp. Watkins Baking Powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup sour cream
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Mix shortening, sugar, egg, and vanilla thoroughly. Blend dry ingredients. Add to sugar mixture alternately with sour cream.
Divide dough; roll out on a well-floured board. Cut with heart-shaped cookie cutters. You can make these as thick as you want, the thicker, the chewier.
Place cookies on lightly greased baking sheets. Sprinkle with sugar unless you are going to ice them. Bake 7-8 minutes or until very lightly browned around the edges. Makes 3-4 dozen.
If you like chewy cookies, roll them out a little thicker. If you like thin, crispy cookies, roll a kind of thin but not real thin or you won't be able to remove to them from cookie pan.
This dough is very easy to work with too! I always double it because I like the thicker cookies.
Decorating Cookies
Make frosting with powdered sugar, butter, and milk. Divide frosting into five separate bowls and add a drop of red (this will make pink colored frosting), blue, green, and yellow food coloring to each. Mix and frost cookies. Add enough food coloring to the last bowl of frosting to make the frosting red or use a tube of purchased red decorating gel or frosting. Add the red frosting to a plastic baggie. Push the icing into one corner of the baggie. Snip off the very end point to make an icing bag. Print Valentine’s Day words and sayings onto the cookies.
Cinnamon Football Cookies
Cookies
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 teaspoon Watkins Vanilla Extract
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon Watkins Ground Cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
24 whole blanched almonds
Decorating Glaze
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 1/2 to 3 teaspoons water
- Heat oven to 350 degrees F. In large bowl, mix brown sugar, butter and vanilla until smooth. Stir in flour, cinnamon and salt until dough holds together.
- Shape dough by scant tablespoonfuls around almonds to form football shapes. On ungreased cookie sheet, place shapes about 1 inch apart.
- Bake 12 to 14 minutes or until set but not brown. Remove from cookie sheet to cooling rack. Cool completely.
- In small bowl, mix powdered sugar and just enough water to make mixture that can be piped from decorating bag. Place glaze in decorating bag fitted with number 3 writing tip. With tip, make football laces on cookies.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 13X9-inch baking pan. In large bowl, combine cake mix, oil and egg; beat on medium speed until crumbly. Stir in nuts. Reserve 1 1/2 cup of crumb mixture. Firmly press remaining crumb mixture on bottom of prepared pan.
In small saucepan, over medium heat, combine remaining ingredients. Cook and stir until chips melt. Pour evenly over prepared crust.
Sprinkle reserved crumb mixture evenly over top. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until edges are firm. Cool. Cut into bars. Drizzle with icing (optional). Store loosely covered at room temperature.

BIRD WATCHING
February is National Wild Bird Feeding Month. As the winter weather continues natural sources of food for birds become scarce. Help out your backyard birds by providing bird seed and water. Jays, chickadees, nuthatches, and many other bird species eat suet during the cold winter months because it contains fat for needed energy. You can buy blocks of suet at your supermarket or birding store or make your own.
If you are bored and have some extra time on your hands how about making an edible snowman for your backyard birds. The birds will find these edible snowmen delicious. They’re made of Cheerios, popcorn, cracked corn, birdseed, suet, dried cranberries, peanut butter and baby carrots.
The 11th annual Great Backyard Bird Count is February 15-18. Join thousands of North American nature enthusiasts by participating. The information you gather in as little as 15 minutes will help support and protect wild bird populations and their habitats. Find tools to help with identification and details on how to participate at www.birdcount.org.
